Rethinking how we do Christmas....
|
Just wanted to share with everyone something I really feel passionate about!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JfGki00T0c&feature=player_embedded
Just rethink how you do Christmas!
Random fact: Do you know in America alone we spend 450 BILLION dollars a year on Christmas alone! Did you know that it would only cost 10 Billion dollars to supply the ENTIRE WORLD with clean drinking water!!! Something is wrong.....we can help change that!

Hmm looks interesting. Sometimes we do forget about how wasteful we are in our world of technology and commerce. I do know there are a lot of people in foreign countries (and sadly even in the US) that are suffering and this seems like it might be a nice way to help them out.
Unfortunately I will be deployed to Iraq for this Christmas so I won't be able to participate or I might actually consider it. Maybe I'll have the opportunity to bless some of the locals over there during Christmas time.

Were so wasteful as a nation its disgusting but Im just as guilty as the next person.
I think you wanting to bless some of the locals in Iraq especially during Christmas would be a great way to show Christ love on people in a practical way! I hope that you are blessed in return for being God's hands and feet!

These past 3-5 years I have limited my Christmas budget to $200 period, and then spend more on charities, food drives, etc. And I try to make things as personal and meaningful as possible. Years before that, I simply joined the mass of people wasting nonstop. But, I remembered where I came from (third world country) and how we didnt have the abundance we have in this country. I may have not experienced the overflowing gift-giving, but I remember the feeling of celebrating the true reason of Christmas -- Christ. Although, I don't think and talk badly of people who just love to have a grand celebration with all the gifts and food and such. It's just my personal conviction.

I really think thats wonderful! Just some ideas ya know! I personally still buy gifts but if Im going to buy them why not buy from somewhere thats going to benefit and actually help to change someones life, rather than buying from a department store where most of their products are keeping people in slavery.
Thanks for your reply!!

It is funny how many people who do not believe in Jesus celebrate Christmas.

Re: rethinking how we do Christmas....

Right, Sarah!
I was chatting w/ a friend the other day about "WWJD?" (what would Jesus do?) about various living situations. Christmas is a good one about which to apply, "WWJD?".
We decided that we'd have to be in to life-long learning to 'cop' His attitudes and values, and to life-long make progress in living accordingly (I am sure many others have figured this out identically).
So, "What would our lives look like?", we asked each other.
We decided to drill down to the basis of the concept of Jesus' life.
--Now we think Jesus was, basically, fundamentally, holy, 'humble to the max', and always 'kingdom conscious'. This is what He modeled for us. (BTW we were assuming Jesus' generosity, mercy, compassion and all that were a function of His holiness & humility)
And so, if we are generally to 'be like Jesus' was, we need to be continuously and earnestly working toward living in holy humility and in 'kingdom consciousness' in the specifics of our everyday living.
--We also decided that if we did not get in to realistic co-accountability with each other (or someone else) about that that we'd soon forget it.
Seems like we are far, faaar from that ideal even as Christians doing Christmas...we've happily and greedily (and in idolatry) joined the pagans in perverting the birthday celebration of our Savior. That is, we are focused on the giving to each other 99.99%, and the fact of His having enabled/graced that generosity in us only 0.01% (or less..?)
[/u]
Instead of "A Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night", at least I am thinking:
"A Holy Christmas to all, and to all a perfect eternity!" ...not quite so melodic & catchy, but much more Jesus-like
